About DMC
Learn about our history, structure, and mission to serve Dimapur
Our History
The Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) has evolved alongside the growth and urbanization of Dimapur, Nagaland’s largest city and commercial hub. Dimapur’s municipal governance began under the British colonial administration when it was a small settlement within the Assam province. However, significant municipal structures only began to take shape post-independence, as Dimapur grew in importance due to its strategic location and role as a trade and transport hub. After India’s independence in 1947, Dimapur was initially part of Assam. In 1963, when Nagaland became a separate state, Dimapur was integrated into its new administrative structure.
The Dimapur Town Committee was the earliest form of local government that managed civic responsibilities in the area. The committee handled basic urban functions such as sanitation, roads, and public health. With Dimapur’s rapid growth, particularly in trade, commerce, and population, the need for a more robust urban governance structure became apparent.
In 2003, the Dimapur Town Committee was upgraded to the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) under the provisions of the Nagaland Municipal Act, 2001. This gave the DMC more authority and responsibilities in managing urban affairs. The creation of the DMC marked a shift towards a more formalized system of governance with expanded roles in taxation, urban planning, sanitation, and public welfare.
The DMC continues to evolve, facing challenges of urbanization, such as waste management, infrastructure development, and traffic congestion. It plays a crucial role in ensuring Dimapur’s sustainable development and improving the quality of life for its citizens. In recent years, the DMC has focused on modernizing the city through improved solid waste management systems and enhancing public spaces and services while working closely with the state government on various development schemes and projects.
